Task 2: In today’s world, private companies rather than the government pay for and conduct most scientific research.

Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

SAMPLE:

It is increasingly common for scientific research to be paid for and carried out by companies rather than the government. This essay will explain why I believe its positives outweigh the drawbacks of privatization.

Considering firstly the negatives of research conducted by businesses, an important one is the danger of creeping biases into research results. The reason for this is that the basic priority of a private company is its profits rather than public welfare, so it is more than possible that they could conduct less rigorous clinical trials for the benefit of their marketing departments. A pharmaceutical company paying for a study of new depression medication, for example, might influence the study’s design or interpretation in ways that favor the drug that they would like to market. Contrast this with public funding research, which is usually performed under rigorous standards from the government and can be used in the service of human welfare.

Nevertheless, there are numerous advantages of private research, the most significant of which is its effectiveness. While government-funded research often requires the collaboration of many personnel from different government departments, research funded by private institutions is not bogged down by such sluggish bureaucracy. As a result, this advantage can enable companies to focus more on their research, which can lead to innovations. Furthermore, researching can act as a catalyst for speeding up the growth of an organization by introducing breakthrough products in the market. Consequently, this gives the business a competitive edge over its competitors, thus becoming the leader in that industry.

In conclusion, I believe that the benefits of efficiency and corporate success that come with scientific research funded by companies outweigh the risk of biases.
