Well, last week I was busy scrolling on my newsfeed Facebook when a post caught my attention. It was a piece of great news from the official fanpage of our city council about a new law regarding environmental protection.
Basically, the post says that plastic and pollution are the top targets for our local authority, so a new legislation to stop the war on plastic has just come into force. Therefore, the use of plastics will be banned by the end of this month, with a paper alternative being offered instead. There are some exceptions, including restaurants, bakeries, and dry cleaning services. And anyone who didn’t bring their own shopping bags would be charged a significant amount of money for plastic bags when shopping.
And in the comment section, I see many retailers, including department stores and convenience store networks, have left their promises to agree to stop giving out free plastic checkout bags right from next month.
So, this new green law is helping to raise awareness as well as make a lasting difference. You know, plastic bags never degrade completely, so the more the amount of plastic bags, the more there is plastic pollution and its effects. And even if we did decide to recycle plastic bags, these materials still end up in oceans and landfills. Besides, if there is no law against the use of plastic bags, I’m sure that consumers will rarely recycle plastic bags, and we just toss plastic bags into the trash or left them to blow in the wind.
Therefore, I’m so excited to see this law coming into effect next month. At least we can do something to help protect the environment.
