How do Vietnamese people make new friends?
I think Vietnamese people often make new friends by going to places that they can meetpeople who share similar interests. For example, if someone is really into volunteering, they can join a local volunteer club or meeting and make friends with people who are also passionate about helping others. Besides, we are now living in the technological era, so young people also tend to meet new friends online. It’s like, they can join an online community where people from all over share common interests, like house design or cooking, or fans of a particular movie, then they can form lasting friendships with each other.
Do you think it is strange to make new friends online?
I don’t think so. I think making new friends online is just like making friends in real life, as social media websites allow us to give comments, video calls, share our thoughts towards one another just like in real life. And when we are online, we don’t have to worry about how to initiate the conversation with someone new and how to keep the conversation going without any awkwardness. I believe people find it much safer to interact with new people online, as if they share something in common with the other person, they can form lasting friendships with them. Still, if they don’t find the other person attractive, they can stop commenting or texting with them.
Why do some people have few friends?
I think because they are comfortable with a small circle of friends. And fewer people in a group always means that you have to deal with less drama. That’s because there will be fewer fights and arguments. Conflicts between friends usually happen when they disagree on something. But when you have a group of only two or three friends, the chances of disagreeing on something is less. And when we have only a few close friends, it can result in close bonding. Our close friends act like our extended family. Most importantly, we can trust each other, and we can share with them things that we can’t share with our family or strangers.
Which is more important, new friendships or old ones?
I would say old friends are more important than new friendships. It’s because new friends that we make, for example, when we move schools, move to new places are usually someone who could not understand us as much as our old friends. So, we need more time to get to know who they really are and whether we can get on well with them, and whether we can count on them. On the other hand, with our old friends who have known us for a long time, we can trust them and spending time with old friends is the time best spent. There’s no explaining, judgment or misunderstanding, and there’s simply a whole world of appreciation of each other’s history. For me, I would say old friends are what matters in life.
