GRAMMAR FEATURES TRONG ACADEMIC WRITING (PART 2) – FORMALITY

Trong Part 1, chúng ta đã cùng phân tích về đặc điểm Compexity trong Writing (xem lại link ở đây nha https://ieltsthempham.com/grammar-features-trong-academic-writing-part-1-complexity/). Tiếp phần 2, cô Thêm sẽ giới thiệu với các bạn về feature Formality (hay còn gọi là sự trang trọng trong văn viết). 

Nhìn chung, để đạt được độ Formality trong Writing, các bạn nên tránh những điều sau 

1. Những từ ngữ và cách biểu đạt thông tục, xã giao (hay sử dụng trong văn nói, giao tiếp hằng ngày). Ex: stuff, a lot of, thing, sort of, kind of, …

2. Các dạng từ rút gọn. Ex: can’t, don’t, doesn’t, haven’t,…

3. Các cụm động từ có 2-3 từ. Ex: put off, bring up, catch up (thường tránh sử dụng phrasal verb nhiều trong văn viết mà hãy sử dụng những động từ xúc tích có nghĩa tương đương, ex: extinguish = put out, mention = bring up, …) 

4. Sử dụng tiêu đề phụ, đánh số hay gạch đầu dòng trong bài viết Writing, bạn chỉ có thể dùng những điều này khi viết Report thôi nhé. Để phân biệt các ý và để bài viết trông rõ ràng hơn, hãy xuống dòng, cách dòng, lùi đầu dòng một cách hợp lí là được nhé.

Ex1: Viết lại câu dưới theo cách Formal hơn

Ex2: Thay cách cụm động từ dưới bằng những động từ đơn tương đương 

1. A primary education system was set up throughout Ireland as early as 1831. (established: thành lập)

2. This will cut down the amount of drug required and so the cost of treatment. (reduce: cắt giảm)

3. The material amenities of life have gone up in Western society. (increased: tăng)

4. The press reflected the living culture of the people; it could influence opinion and reinforce existing attitudes but it did not come up with new forms of entertainment. (come up with: sáng tạo) 

5. Thus, he should have looked into how the patient has coped previously. (investigated: điều tra) 

6. The aggregate of outstanding balances went up and down quite violently. (fluctuated: dao động) 

7. In 1947 the Treasury brought up the question of excluding South Africa (and India) from the sterling area. (raised: đặt ra) 

8. Dieters often feel that they should totally get rid of high-fat and high-sugar foods. (eliminate: loại bỏ) 

9. Thus when a Gallic bishop in 576 converted the local Jewish community to Christianity, those who turned down baptism were expelled from the city. (refused: từ chối) 

10. Western scholars gradually turned out a corpus of translations from the Arabic and studies of Islam. (produced: sản xuất)
